How far along fly to give birth

The most common mistake is starting to prepare at week 30. By that point some options are already off the table: airlines restrict travel, and there is not enough time to arrange status. We count the calendar backwards from your due date.

Short answer

The best time to arrive in Mexico 6–10 weeks before the estimated due date — approximately Week 30–34 of pregnancy. But preparation needs to start much earlier: by week 20, because obtaining resident status takes 4–8 weeks, and that is not something money can speed up.

First restriction: airlines

A clinic is chosen based on the doctor and who handles the paperwork, not the décor

Airlines won’t let you board at a late stage of pregnancy, and each carrier has its own rules. The general logic is:

  • Before 28 weeks — you typically board without questions and without a certificate.
  • 28–36 weeks — typically require a doctor’s certificate — often dated no more than 7 days prior — confirming that the pregnancy is progressing normally and there are no contraindications to flying.
  • After 36 weeks (with a multiple pregnancy — after 32 weeks) — most airlines simply will not let you board.

Check the carrier’s rules on its website before buying a ticket — they vary vary by airline and change from time to time. Flights to Mexico from Russia involve a connection and are long, that’s another reason not to wait until the last moment.

Second restriction: status — and it is stricter

You cannot fly to Mexico as a pregnant tourist and hope for the best: at Cancún airport, pregnant women without without resident status are regularly turned back. This is not a scare story — it is standard border-service practice. The only reliable route — resident status arranged before departure.

The process takes 4–8 weeks to prepare and submit. The countdown therefore looks like this: if you want to fly at week 32, documents need to be in progress by week 24 — and the decision made by week 20. This process is handled by lawyers SVOY Legal — we coordinate timelines but do not replace them.

Why flying in ’at 38 weeks, just for a short stay’ is a bad idea

  • The airline may not let you board — and the ticket will be lost along with the plan.
  • The clinic will not accept a patient without an antenatal care record. The doctor needs at least a few appointments before the birth.
  • The child’s documents are processed within 4–6 weeks after birth. Leaving right after discharge is not possible anyway — allow at least 2–3 months in the country in your plan.
  • Labour may begin earlier than expected. That’s exactly what the 6–10 week buffer is for.

What to prepare in parallel

While status is being arranged, two more matters are handled in parallel. Housing for 3–4 months near the clinic — renting in Cancún: neighbourhoods and prices at SVOY HOME. And finances: cards issued in Russia don’t work in Mexico — payment arrangements for the clinic and rent need to be worked out in advance — that’s a separate task, and our article how to pay for childbirth from Russia.

We choose the clinic in parallel — see the Cancún comparison article Cancún clinics for childbirth.

Q&A

Common questions

How far along should you be when flying to Mexico to give birth?
Ideally 6–10 weeks before the expected due date — around weeks 30–34. Before 28 weeks there are no restrictions; after 36 weeks most airlines will not allow boarding.
When should you start preparing for childbirth in Mexico?
Before week 20 of pregnancy. Obtaining residency status takes 4–8 weeks, and without it pregnant women are turned away at the border in Cancún. Factor in time for finding a clinic, accommodation, and flights.
How far into pregnancy can you board a flight?
Usually up to 36 weeks for a single pregnancy and up to 32 for a multiple pregnancy; from 28 weeks onward, a recent doctor’s certificate is typically required. Each airline has its own exact rules — check before buying your ticket.
How long do you need to stay in Mexico after giving birth?
Allow 4–6 weeks to complete the baby’s paperwork: birth certificate, CURP, and Mexican passport. Including the pre-birth period, the total length of stay is around 3–4 months.
